Why Lung Health Matters in New Hampshire

Tobacco Use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., killing 2 out of 3 users. For every tobacco-related death, at least 30 more Americans live with serious tobacco-related illnesses. In New Hampshire, tobacco use claims around 2,000 lives annually and costs over $1 billion in healthcare related costs and lost productivity.

Vaping is the most commonly used tobacco products among youth for the 11th year in a row (NYTS 2023). These products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can disrupt brain development in teens.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. It affects roughly 1 in 15 New Hampshire adults, many of whom are undiagnosed. Awareness and early intervention remain low.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions. New Hampshire has one of the highest adult asthma rates in the country, with thousands of new diagnoses each year. Over one-third of children with asthma live in homes that are not tobacco-free.

Air Quality, indoor and outdoor, directly affects lung health. Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, where pollutant levels can be 2–5 times higher than outside. Triggers like smoke, mold, dust mites, and pet dander can worsen asthma and other lung diseases.

Breathe New Hampshire Fills a Need

Breathe New Hampshire is the only statewide organization dedicated solely to healthy lungs in the Granite State. With limited public health infrastructure, our work fills a critical gap by providing education, resources, and advocacy for people living with lung disease, their caregivers, and the healthcare community. Every donation stays local and directly supports New Hampshire residents who rely on us to breathe easier.
