Outdoor Air

What is Outdoor Air Pollution?

Outdoor air pollution is what results when harmful chemicals, particles and gases are discharged into the air we breathe. Most outdoor air pollution is caused by human activity.

Outdoor Air pollution comes from many different sources including factories, power plants, and smelters and smaller sources such as dry cleaners and degreasing operations; mobile sources such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains; and naturally occurring sources such as windblown dust, and volcanic eruptions, all contribute to air pollution. Air Quality can be affected in many ways by the pollution emitted from these sources. These pollution sources can also emit a wide variety of pollutants.

Some of the most common sources are:

Ozone

Particulate Matter

Carbon Monoxide

Nitrogen Dioxide

Sulphur Dioxide

Lead

Eighth Graders Climb Pack Monanock to See How Clean Air Is Measured.

Breathe New Hampshire (BNH) and staff from the NH Dept. of Environmental Services (DES) are hosting 140 eighth students for the Clean Air Day Hike on May 20 & 21. The students, all from the Jaffrey-Rindge School, will be divided into small groups, and guided along the trail to the peak of the monadnock. At the top, they will have the opportunity to visit the air monitoring station, a fire tower, and vehicle displays. They will also participate in discussions about visibility, air quality, and how health and outdoor air are related. BNH and DES staff will be available to discuss some of the geology of the surroundings, as well. May 22 has been scheduled as a rain date.

The air monitoring station is one of the state’s 20 different site locations which measure and track numerous air pollutants around the state. DES and other organizations use the data that is collected to determine the status of New Hampshire’s air quality, predict air pollution episodes, enact protective measures and warnings, protect public health, and protect the natural environment. To learn more about the state’s air monitoring stations, follow this link.
